He was an outstanding sailor in 14 ft dinghies sailing with Bob Keeley, then in the Flying Dutchman and Finn Classes. In the Finn Class he narrowly missed Olympic selection for Australia in the 1956 Olympics. Bob’s achievements as Commodore included: -construction of the first “Retreiver” -development of the sabot junior sailing program with the assistance of parents such as Max Rodd and Max Whitbourne. -Building cold moulded Flying Fifteens and Top Hat class keelboats through his Mouldcraft business in Frankston. -Lobbying for a reclaim to be developed at the pier. Bob later moved to Queensland where he commenced a new business RL Yachts designing and building the fleet of trailer sailers bearing that name which still race actively as a fleet and hold National Championships annually. In honour of Bob’s achievements at the Club the Foundation named one of the Pacer dinghies ‘Wasp’ the name used by Bob on his racing yachts. Sophie Jackson had her first outing in the 470 with 5 of the top 10 in the world competing! The likes of Aussie gold medalist Matt Belcher who has been sailing the 470 for 20 years meant it was a huge learning experience and showed how far the gap is to the top at Olympic level.
Congratulations to Rhett Gowans who won another Australian Title last week, this time in an Aero 7, adding to his Laser Radial win a few years ago! The event was sailed in Port Stephens, Rhett said the sailing was fantastic in big sea breezes!

We have re-published the document Stephen Bolton wrote in April last year which clarifies how to Finish on water under shorten course. He wrote this document after the course on the day was shortened due to a massive front on the horizon and because Retriever became literally 'stuck to the bottom' whilst shortening, not all boats Finished correctly on that day either. Click here to read that document. In brief, the Golden Rule offered at the conclusion of that doco is 100% accurate for on water finishing anywhere in the world - and it can be easily tweaked for our MYC fixed mark racing when the course is shortened from the Tower. Principally, though, it is the same! In the April 2017 doc, Stephen Bolton wrote: ‘Golden Rule for Shorten Course at a Mark: Always sail between the vessel displaying Code Flag S and the mark it is adjacent to from the direction of the last mark (‘from the course side’) - no matter where the Committee vessel sits, no matter which mark it sits at and no matter what hand course you are sailing.’ And because the Tower is always in the same spot(!) and Mark ‘S’ is always used for our fixed mark courses, we can tweak the way that Golden Rule reads a little so that it applies to the to the Tower and not on water vessels: ‘Always sail between the Tower displaying code flag and Board S and the ‘S’ mark from the direction of the last mark (‘from the course side’) - no matter which mark you're coming from and no matter what hand course you are sailing.’ Always. Note: Whilst it would be pretty rare for a fixed mark course to be shortened anywhere BUT at Mark 'S', it is technically it is possible - and, if done, the first version of the golden rule immediately applies! We hope it helps! Race Committee MYC are delighted to announce a new corporate partnership with Positive Psychology. Based in Mornington Positive Psychology is equipped to address your needs.
