MYC was well represented at the Australian Sailing - Victoria Awards last Friday night.
Mornington Yacht Club had Jack Eickmeyer win Youth Sailor of the Year, Lachie Weber was 1st in Vic Sailing Cup in Laser Radials, Olivia Cameron & Lily Fogarty 1st in 420s. James Jackson & Lachie Weber were co-captains in Peninsula Grammar's 1st trophy’s for School States. Sophie Jackson, Jack, Lachie, James Jackson, Lily & Matilda Richardson, there as our 6 Victorian Institute of Sport sailors were presented to the audience. Our Youth Sailors were inspired from their chat to Glenn Ashby. Congrats to Albert Park for Club of Year in their 150th year, which MYC was a finalist and noted as a ‘club to watch’ on the night. Congratulations to Grant Chipperfield nominated Male Sailor Finalist of the year. Congratulations former MYC CEO Rod Austin awarded Sports Professional of the year. Team MYC’s wonderful achievements reflect individual pursuits of excellence, but more than that a fabulous club culture with members and volunteers incredibly supportive of our pursuit of enjoyment in our sport for life. Last Fridays award presentations to our youth sailors marked a special point in each of their respective journeys to achieve success in Australian Sailing. While at the same time completing serious stages of their education these young people are also beginning to wet their appetite for international competition with an eye towards representing Australia in future Olympic sailing events.
The commitment to hard work combined with the obvious comradie amongst this cohort is terrific to witness and inspiring to the next crop of young sailors coming through. Credit is also due to their coaches, youth volunteers and parents supporting these efforts. The MYC General Committee and Foundation working with Training and Development are anxious to support the inclusiveness and growth of youth sailing at Mornington through improved facilities and equipment. Prudent investment in ribs, training craft and coaching staff will continue. Longer term we will have more to say about upgrading our facilities on Mothers Beach. Thankyou to Sophie Jackson, Immi Weber and Sarah Grant for preparing the nominations. On behalf of all our members - Well Done. Congratulations to Andrew Young, our new Commodore and to Greg his past 3 years as Commodore Thank you to everyone who attended our AGM on Sunday, it was great to see some faces that we haven't seen around the place in a while! Congratulations to our new Commodore Andrew Young, to our new Rear CommodoreTrevor Neate, to the rest of the board members who are all continuing on and to our new addition Ben Jones who will be representing Training & Development on the board. We are in safe hands and look forwards to a great season!! From our MYC Team... “It was an incredible event we’ve had so much fun and learnt more than we could put into a post. We’re extremely grateful for the clubs generous support and would like to thank everyone that’s got us here. It’s been an opportunity that we’ve loved every minute of. We had a score card that we felt didn’t reflect our moments of glory, we lead in places and rounded marks in first position time and time again. With little things letting us down, we’re already looking ahead to see what’s next. Sailing in this format has been invaluable in our development as sailors and has complemented our individual Olympic ambitions and campaigns. We’re feeling extremely privileged to represent our wonderful club on the world stage and can’t wait to do it again in the future. Some Highlights; “We arrived In Travemunde to a cultural experience with the beautiful port side coastal town welcoming us with warm breezes and a wonderful atmosphere coupled with terrific architecture filling us with excitement for the first day of racing.” “The first day was due to missed trains in Germany together with injury, bad weather & Covid in AUS as well as individual summer & European sailing campaigns also our first day as a team on the J70. Embarrassingly we didn’t realise the start gun had gone in the first race but we weren’t the only ones half the fleet weren’t on the line. See the photo reference 🤪. At least we’d pulled the kite up and down, gybed the boat and tacked, we were ready ! Quickly the jib was unfurled and off to it we made the top mark in a acceptable 6th and crossed line after a sneaky goose winged spinnaker as pictured in a respectable 6th. What we quickly discovered was although our opposition was friendly on the ride out to the course they also were professional sailors most campaigning full time Olympians and keel boat sailors there was no shortage of talent to be inspired by, not to worry we were confident in our ability and when able to start well we could lead with appropriate speed despite being almost 80kg underweight with combined crew weight ! The results we had were a roller coaster but we embraced and adapted to what came our way and took every result and action as a learning opportunity keeping a positive and open mindset through out.
We hope you enjoyed our recap on what was 4 days of sailing we won't forget. Yours in Sailing, Warm Regards, James, Lily, Matilda & Jack." Matilda and Lily continue on there European sailing adventures heading to Italy for the 49er Fx Junior Worlds promptly once racing finished. We wish them the best of luck and remain incredibly proud of Team MYC’s awesome effort. PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN Calling all mates of Schultz, all mates of Schultz. All hands on deck is requested for a gathering in honour of our mighty mate Paul (Schultzy) Scholten with the scattering of his ashes accompanied by refreshments and reminisces of his extraordinary life. With a life-story that defies human imagination and crosses out of reality and into what reads a lot like an epic fiction action thriller with a splash of a sensational fantasy, there is no doubt that the stories recounted here will be 40 per cent taller than the truth and fabricated with gusto more than twice the height than necessary. The Southern command will be gathering with his wife Toon and their girls Yada and Sophia at the Mornington Yacht Club, VIC @ 1400 hours in sync with the Northern Alliance in The Whitsundays (exact co-ordinates TBA) on Wednesday 24th August 2022. All going to plan a live feed will link these two stations to ensure we spread the remains of our larger-than-life mate in unison and as far and wide as possible. RIP our fearless friend Schultz - 30/10/1962 - 28/07/2022 Simon is a head trainer for the ORCV Sea Safety Survival Course. He has kindly offered his time to present these sessions for our collective members’ benefit.
